THE STORY 3 YEARS . 21 FESTIVALS . 20,000 MILES
[ Rewind to 2011 ] A classmate of mine was developing a volunteer program called Ground Control for Insomniac Events. The idea was simple: Recruit a team of 18-24 year olds to link festival safety staff with Insomniac's youth-driven experiences. As a festival head and a public relations major, I thought the idea was brilliant and a few months later I was on the road to the inaugural Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas.
Five festivals and 10 months later, I was given the opportunity to assist with Ground Control's operations at Nocturnal Wonderland Texas. Two weeks later, I flew out to EDC New York—I was addicted to event logistics. A month later, I joined the team as a contracted Ground Control base assistant at EDC Las Vegas 2012.
INSOMNIAC GUEST SERVICES
While interning at Invisible Children from July 2012 until May 2013, I simultaneously worked on Night Owl/Ground Control recruitment and contributed to the management of the teams at three festivals. I also began to build out Ground Control's online media presence in the fall of 2012. Within six months, I increased followers and engagement by 70 percent and doubled its audience in less than a year--creating an online workforce community at no cost.
In March 2013, we re-branded Insomniac's volunteer program as Insomniac Night Owls to instill a sense of community and increase team member retention rates. With the launch, I developed and launched social efforts for the program. During the 2013 fall festival season, I was brought on as a Night Owl Festival Supervisor where I managed Night Owl roles at info booths, phone charging stations, art installations, silent disco nights, locker stations and recruited team members for Insomniac's art performance department during four nation-wide festivals.
